Practice Safety with Caladiums

With their vibrant, colorful leaves that almost look painted on, it’s no wonder caladiums have become a wildly popular outdoor landscaping and container plant over the last few years. These tropical perennials offer big, bold leaf patterns and textures that instantly jazz up any garden bed or pot. And with so many leaf colors and shapes to choose from, the design possibilities are endless!

It’s important to understand how to avoid any trouble with these gorgeous tropicals. Like many members of the Araceae family, caladium bulbs contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. If ingested, these needle-like crystals can cause significant burning, swelling, and discomfort of the mouth, lips, tongue, and throat.  They can also cause skin irritation, but most topical first aid, like the Shuttle lotion we use on our farms, can take care of that.

So while caladiums offer gorgeous, artistic flair, they must be handled responsibly, especially in homes with curious pets or small children. Thankfully, by following a few simple safety guidelines, you can cultivate dazzling caladium displays that minimize the risks.

Tips for Safe Caladium Gardening

Here are some top tips for safely growing caladiums in gardens and containers:

  • Plant caladiums out of reach of pets and children, either up high or surrounded by mulch or rocks. This prevents access to the bulbs and deters digging in the soil.
  • Monitor small children when caladium bulbs are accessible to prevent tasting or touching.
  • Talk to children about asking permission before touching plants and teach them which plants are off-limits.
  • Keep caladium houseplants on high shelves or plant hangers where they cannot be reached.
  • Remove and discard any damaged or chewed caladium leaves or plants, including the tubers.

By taking sensible precautions, caladium fans can find plenty of safe ways to enjoy these magnificent plants in gardens, patios, and indoor spaces. Just be sure to limit access for pets and small kids. If poisoning does occur, seek emergency veterinary treatment immediately.

The Benefits of Caladiums

When cared for responsibly, caladiums offer fantastic benefits:

  • Endless variety—Choose from a kaleidoscope of spectacular leaf shapes, colors, and patterns.
  • Low maintenance—Caladium tubers thrive in shade gardens with little care required.
  • Long-lasting color—Leaves last in peak form for months through the gardening season.
  • Unique containers—Caladiums look spectacular spilling out of baskets or unusual vessels.
  • Artistic versatility—Use caladiums as living art in borders, beds, entryways, patios, and poolsides.

While they demand some caution, caladiums amp up the wow-factor in gardens and containers like few other plants can. Just be sure to keep them safely out of reach of pets and kids, and you can enjoy their vibrant beauty all season long.
